At Snipes Farm Day Camp, children and youth ages 5-15 unplug from tech and plug into the beauty, peace and adventure of nature and life on a farm. On any given day, campers explore 80 acres of woods, creeks and gardens. They might find a salamander under a log in the woods, a crayfish in the creek, or head to the orchard to pick blackberries. Tomatoes from the garden go to the camp kitchen for fresh salsa for the afternoon snack. Art projects connect to the weekly theme. Campers could do tie dye, find seeds for a mosaic, make a puppet or a mask. Favorite games like GaGa, Capture the Flag, Doctor Ball or Park Ranger include friendly competition and cooperation. After 16 years ,our big repertoire of silly camp songs adds cheer all day long!
Our days begin with our big morning circle with songs and excitement for all that is to come, and we end all together with more songs, sharing highlights from the day before heading home. During Community Care time, everyone helps, people, animals and the farm. They feed bunnies, goats and chickens; harvest, weed and water the garden, pull out a patch of knotweed, or help keep things tidy and clean. Morning and afternoon activities are hands-on, whether cooking, building a fairy house or fort, doing archery, or hanging out with their bunk pets (guinea pigs, hermit crabs, turtles or a bearded dragon). Campers are learning about the natural world, stretching, and growing into new skills, making terrific friends, and having fun!
The Camp Leadership Program for youth ages 13-15 includes camp activities and team building. They also help with special service projects and leadership opportunities with farmers or helping with younger campers. They head off for a field trip adventure every Thursday in the region that includes state and county parks, specialty local farms, kayaking, or heading to a rock gym.
