Mompreneur of the Week: Meet Jennie Broderick!

By Jennie Broderick, Owner of Sassy Sweet Signs, and Traci Walter, Publisher of Macaroni Kid Lower Bucks December 16, 2020

Each week, Macaroni Kid Lower Bucks features a different "Mompreneur" -- a local mom who also runs a small business in Lower Bucks. The challenges for small business owners during the COVID-19 pandemic have been unprecedented, and even more so for many moms who simultaneously juggle virtual schooling and the many social and emotional challenges that children face during this confusing time. Meet Jennie Broderick!

Hi, I’m Jennie Broderick! I’ve been married to my husband for 16 years! We have two sweet and energetic sons (3 years & 8 years).  I’m the Chief Yard Sasser for Sassy Sweet Signs, a yard greeting company.  Back in July, I saw a few Facebook posts from local moms looking for yard signs.  A few of the companies they had contacted weren’t getting back to them in a timely manner, so it sparked the idea for me to look into this.  After a few months of going back and forth with the idea, I decided to go for it and filed my LLC in October!  I officially launched my business in mid-November and have been busy sassing lawns with greetings ever since!

I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit thanks to my parents who have their own CAD business.  In 2006, I launched Sassy Sweet Treats, a baked goods company based out of Jersey City, NJ, which specialized in cookies, brownies, whoopie pies and challah bread!  I participated in weekly farmers markets, sold wholesale to local restaurants and cafes, and had an online presence from which customers could order gift tins.  It was a lot of hard work, but connecting with the community and making my customers smile with super yummy baked goods brought me such joy.

I gave birth to my first son in September of 2012.  Shortly after, I decided to hang up my baker’s hat and focus on him.  Since then, I welcomed another son in March of 2017.  I had considered starting Sassy Sweet Treats up again, but we made a move from Jersey City, NJ, to Newtown, PA, in August 2019, so I’d basically have to start all over again.  The thought of baker's life plus mom life just wasn’t jiving with me.

The Perfect Family-Friendly Business

When I had the idea of starting Sassy Sweet Signs, I felt it was a much better fit while still allowing me to create joy for people!  Most of my yard sassing happens at night when my kids are in bed, so I’m still able to be home with them all day!  This is especially helpful with current circumstances and virtual school days! My boys absolutely love that I have this business and enjoy being a part of it. They get excited when I get new inventory in. They also really enjoy giving me feedback on displays that I’m preparing for. It really is the perfect family-friendly business for me to have right now.

Sassy Sweet Signs is based out of Newtown, PA and specializes in creating joy with fun and festive yard greetings!  We offer themed displays for rent for all occasions, with birthday celebrations being our most popular!  Making someone feel special on their birthday feels so good!  We do our best to create unique and personalized displays, highlighting the yard greeting recipient's favorite things!

Our displays are so unique and stand out with their big (some are as long as 25 feet!) and colorful beauty!  We take pride in creating a visually pleasing display to ensure that our clients get exactly what they want.  We also use spotlights to illuminate the displays at night, which is such a sharp look! We feel confident that if you drive around and see different yard greetings, ours will stand out!

Juggling Being a Mom and Entrepreneur

The juggle of mom and entrepreneur wouldn’t be possible for me without my incredibly supportive husband!  He has always supported me and all of my crazy ideas, this one being no different! He takes on a lot of the evening responsibilities with the kids on nights where it’s ideal for me to head out earlier for installations or pickups.   He also has a great business sense so I often consult with him on various business ideas. I love showing him all of the rough layouts I do in preparation for an install and value his opinions so much.

Sassy Sweet Signs is a one-woman show!  When you request a yard greeting, you deal with me, the owner, from start to finish! I take pride in outstanding customer service as well and always go out of my way to make the entire process easy and fun for my clients.
