Tell us your story.

I am the Director of a local nonprofit organization called Family Promise of Lower Bucks (FPLB). With the help of local congregations, Family Promise of Lower Bucks – a locally based non-profit organization – offers compassionate and concentrated support to homeless children and their families. Families receive 24-hour-a-day support, a safe place to stay, three meals-a-day, and comprehensive support services, all free of charge. The program enables families to stay together during crisis, when they may possibly be divided at traditional shelters into separate men’s and women’s dorms. Family Promise also works with families to help them find employment and sustainable housing options that will enable them to regain a sense of normalcy, independence and stability. As the one and only full-time paid staff member, FPLB relies heavily on the dedication of our volunteers from local congregations, businesses and the general community to provide support, meals and most of all, caring and compassionate fellowship to our families. We currently receive the majority of our funding through philanthropic donations from individuals, community groups, civil service groups and congregations.

I am also a single mother to my amazing six year old daughter who keeps me on my toes as a feisty, independent soul but also my release and comfort at the end of each stressful day. I like to involve her as much as possible in my program, bringing her to our Day Center on occasion or to the congregations in the evening to play with the children in our program. As an only child, she enjoys the added playmates!

How can members of our community get involved, and/or how can they learn more about what you're doing?

Family Promise of Lower Bucks is always in need of volunteers! Some of our opportunities include: preparing dinner entrees, sides, salads or desserts; sitting and eating dinner with the families; staying overnight in a private room to be on hand in case of emergencies; donating food, cleaning products, paper products, office supplies or other goods to our Day Center; transporting our families to/from the congregations in our 15 passenger van (no CDL required); donating funds through our $10 on the 10th program. We are also searching for additional sites that are able to host our families between the times of 6:00pm - 6:30am. Host sites can be churches, businesses, halls, vacant rental properties, day care centers, etc., that have at least 5 rooms or a large room that can be partitioned off to accommodate private space for each of our families and overnight volunteers.
